The Presbytery of Cayuga-Syracuse and Pyongyang Presbytery (PCK, South Korea) entered into an International Partnership relationship in April 2000 for the purposes of developing deep and lasting reciprocal relationships, learning from one another, and working together to serve Jesus Christ through joint mission projects in different countries around the world.
Over the past 12 years Cayuga-Syracuse has hosted 12 adult delegations and six youth delegations from Korea and sent almost 100 of its members to Korea. Delegations to Korea have included adults, youth, Korean War Veterans, and families with adopted Korean children. In one way or another, all 39 churches in Cayuga-Syracuse have been involved in the work of the Partnership.
In April 2012 a delegation of 12 members of the Presbytery of Cayuga-Syracuse will visit Pyongyang Presbytery in connection with their Presbytery’s 100th Anniversary celebration. The scheduling of exchange visits and the status, progress, future actions, and directions of our joint mission efforts in North Korea, Malawi and China will be discussed.
The Partnership’s current mission focus is supplying insecticide-treated mosquito nets as part of a multi-pronged project of malaria eradication in the Blantyre North Relief Project (BNRP) of Malawi (www.bnrp.org). BNRP’s malaria eradication project supplies insecticide-treated nets to women, children, and families, and sends workers on bicycles to rural areas to educate and monitor health issues. Since its implementation in 2010, malaria deaths have been reduced significantly in the Blantyre region.
Joint mission work of the Partnership has also included: Bibles and humanitarian aid for North Korean citizens; support for Gulf Coast victims of Hurricane Katrina; support for Lay Pastor Training of almost 15,000 Chinese men and women through a mission site in Macau; and support for the Blantyre North Relief Project (BNRP) in Malawi including food, clothing, wells, homes for orphans, hand-crank electric generators, and health workers.
By building a reciprocal relationship and engaging as co-workers in the global mission of the Church, the Partnership provides opportunities for both U.S. and Korean Presbyterians to experience the unity of the Church through learning as well as teaching, receiving as well as giving; to express the unity of the Church throughout the world; and to respond more faithfully to the challenges of the Gospel.
