The Vanderkamp Center has offered summer camp and retreat facilities since 1965. Vanderkamp is located on Oneida Lake - about 40 minutes from Syracuse and less than an hour from Rome and Utica. There are 850 acres of wilderness with a network of trails for hiking, biking, and cross-country skiing. We have a private 45 acre lake, and guests can use any of our collection of rowboats, kayaks, canoes, and fishing poles to enjoy it. We also offer swimming for groups that provide advanced notice. We have 3 large lodges (which sleep 26-28) located near or on our lake, 3 smaller lodges (which sleep 6-13), as well as more rustic cabins and tent sites for people looking to rough it! Our dining room can accommodate up to 150 people, and we have separate meeting areas and a conference room as well.
The heart of Vanderkamp is our Christian Summer Camp experience. We’ve been radically rethinking what it means to interact with kids in a Christian way, by fusing cutting edge child development theory with Christian Theology. You can check out our essays page to read articles on our approach, which is being replicated and learned from by camps across the country. And it’s not all just theory. Campers returned for extra weeks in record numbers last year, and our Winter Reunion had more than three times as many attendees than last year!
As one camper put it upon leaving, "This has been the best week of my life. Everyone says you shouldn`t tease, but Vanderkamp is like the one place where that actually happens."
Our summer camp employs a theological approach that is basic enough in language for someone who has never encountered Christian messages to understand, and appropriate for children of all faith backgrounds. We focus on a theology of mastery, where children are helped to perfect some of the foundational messages in the Bible, starting with “Love your Neighbor as Yourself.”
One mother described her daughter`s experience tearfully on the final day of camp, saying, "I`ve just never seen her happy before. She really feels loved here. She shows people love here. It`s truly a miracle."
We end our summers with an intergenerational family camping experience, where last summer people from ages 1-70+ camped together.
A grandmother wrote, "We were very blessed with the love and kindness shown to everyone. That was an experience I will never forget. The children are singing the songs and wishing they could have stayed longer."
From our Alternative Spring Break mission trip to our programmed retreats, there is something at Vanderkamp for everyone to enjoy. Our facilities are also available for rent with full meal service for 12 months a year. Have programming needs? Feel free to reach out to our Director, James Davis, and have him help plan, program, and run your retreat.
