Summary of Leadership Team meeting on May 25, 2017

 

The Presbytery’s Leadership Team held its monthly meeting on May 25 at Onondaga Hill Church.  The following are among the items that were discussed at the meeting…

The Moderator, the Rev. Shawn Reyburn, reminded people that Rebecca Chaffee, a candidate under care of our Presbytery, will be ordained as a Minister of Word and Sacrament on Thursday, June 29, at 7:00 p.m. at Pebble Hill Presbyterian Church in DeWitt. Shawn also announced tentative meeting sites for the August 15, 2017 and May 15, 2018 Presbytery meetings, and plans are continuing to find hosts for the remaining 2017 and 2018 meetings.

The Stated Clerk/Communicator, the Rev. Steve Plank, reported on the Synod’s Early Ministry Institute and about the online GoToMeeting discussion group that was held about Doug Pagitt’s book, Flipped. Steve also announced that, although no action needs to be taken at this time, he intends to retire at the end of April 2018.

The Chairperson, elder Linda Russell, led the members in a time of debriefing of last Saturday’s Presbytery meeting. Among other reflections shared, people thought having worship at the beginning of the meeting helped set the tone for the day. Having Prayer Cards available for people to fill out, and also having the Moderator name someone to serve as Chaplain of the Day, were especially meaningful. Linda also reported that a total of 18 people have registered to be a part of the Central New York Presbytery Convention in Auburn, coming from our Presbytery as well as the Presbyteries of Northern New York, Utica, and Susquehanna Valley. Participants from our Presbytery will be Shawn Reyburn, Rita Hooper, Linda Russell, Mario Bolivar, Dan DeBrucker-Cota, and Steve Plank

The chairperson of the Finance and Property Work Group, elder Gordie Howard, submitted financial reports, including the completed 2015 audit of Presbytery records. He also presented an amended Treasurer’s Job Description, which the Leadership Team approved.

Shawn Reyburn reported for the Presbyterian Youth Connection Work Group. The PYC has meet in the last couple of weeks, and discussion was held about summer and fall plans, including a mission trip to a Heifer Program Farm.

Elder Donna Hunt reported for the Ministry Work Group. The Leadership Team approved the requests to transfer the membership of the Rev. Tracie Martin to Shenandoah Presbytery at their request, and also approved the Interim Ministry Agreement between the Rev. Kathleen Waters and the Henrietta United Church of Christ in Henrietta, NY.

A suggestion was made to utilize the annual minutes and records review times to include time for training and orientation about completing and submitting the Annual Statistical Report to General Assembly, as well as completing annual reports required by the Presbytery (terms of call, church information, etc.)

The Leadership Team approved two applications for Use of Restricted Funds from General Assembly:

  1. From First Presbyterian Church of Skaneateles for work needed to be done at The Presbyterian Manor in Skaneateles, in the amount of $1,373.00.
  2. From the Korean Church of Syracuse for support of the Boaz Project through which they help spread the Gospel to refugees through a computer class, in the amount of $1,700.00.

A question was raised after last week’s Presbytery meeting about who is responsible for paying child care providers at Presbytery meetings. After a brief discussion, people strongly felt that the Presbytery is responsible for paying the providers as well as paying the costs for any needed background check(s).

The next regular meeting of the Leadership Team will be on Thursday, June 22, 2017, beginning at 5:00 p.m. at the Onondaga Hill Church. The meeting will be immediately followed by a Presbytery UNCO supper and event from 6:00-8:00 at the church.
